Road Traffic Safety in Lewisham

The largest number of serious unintentional injuries and deaths in children are because of road traffic accidents. Five per cent of all such accidents are known to involve children. This topic summarises a report at the request of the Lewisham Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB) to explore what might be done to reduce mortality and serious injury due to road traffic accidents (RTAs) in Lewisham. The report analyses the pattern of road traffic accidents involving children in Lewisham, examines how policy related to road safety in children and young people is formulated and implemented nationally and locally, examines what is known to be effective in preventing RTAs in children, identifies gaps in the current service provided in Lewisham, and makes recommendations.
